Preparation of Polystryene Latex Particles in a Rotating Reactor

The goal was to determine whether or not the rotating reactor can be used to grow monodisperse latex particles to sizes larger than are currently possible in ground-based processes. In order to accomplish this objective a two-fold experimental program was proposed: (1) the investigation of the operating characteristics of the reactor in terms of any temperature gradients which may exist while in operation, as well as, to what extent sedimentation and creaming are counteracted by the rotational motion of the cylinder; and (2) recipe development for producing large-particle-size monodisperse latexes in the reactor by the method of successive seeding. A description of the results obtained in temperature profile and particle concentration studies and in addition, several polymerizations of large-size latexes are presented.
