Hardness, tensile and Charpy-V testing, and fracture mechanics results of shielded metal arc and submerged arc welded joints for quenched and tempered high-strength steel N-A-XTRA-70 (Ste 690) are given. Results for joints welded with Ni-Cr-Mo alloyed filler materials using arc energies of 17 kJ/cm and 30 kJ/cm and preheat temperature of 170 C show that the weld metal strength and toughness properties are close to the base material values. Hardness varies in the range 278 to 337 HV5 for the weld metals and 295 to 476 HV5 for the heat affected zones of the joints. Weld metals show reasonably good transition behavior compared with the base material. Arc energy has no marked effect on the KJ transition behavior of the welds.
