The history of satellite positioning; principles of electromagnetic positioning; and atmospheric effects on radio propagation are reviewed. The NNSS/TRANSIT, NAVSTAR/GPS, and POPSAT systems are described. Potential users and user requirements of real time satellite positioning systems are discussed.
