The sensor requirements of a weapon system are outlined, together with possible target cues. A typical system specification is presented to provide the basis for imager performance analysis. A thermal imager environmental model and the basic theory of infrared radiation are introduced. Thermal imager concepts are reviewed. The theory of imager performance is considered. Image processing techniques which provide enhanced images or an improved classification capability (either by manual or automatic means) are reviewed. The demonstrated effectiveness of these techniques and whether they could be economically incorporated into the weapon system are considered. Thermal imager performance in the surveillance and tracking roles for the specified weapon system is evaluated. Performance limitations are highlighted.
