The performance of error control procedures in high speed satellite channels, and an isolated satellite channel were investigated. The tolerable bit error rate was calculated for different throughput requirements and error control procedures. Satellite link protocols which can be switched on and off in the sequencing of blocks were analyzed. Assuming an end-to-end connection with one satellite link, the interaction of Go-Back-N and Selective-Repeat protocols with the ISO transport protocol was determined using queueing network models. Results show that the implementation of a complicated Selective-Repeat protocol only pays off for a small region of the channel performance, and that within an end-to-end connection the correct choice of the time-out value is more critical than the choice of the level-two error control procedure.
