Tools adapted from the local differential geometry of surfaces are used to aid visualization of scalar fields in 2-D by means of a global embedding in flat 3-D space. By these means, 'skeletal' information about flowfield quantities can be deduced and thus circumvent the necessity of drawing very large numbers of graphical objects.
