The titanium Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) process developedfor the cost effective manufacture of critical aeroengine components is applied to the manufacture of Plate Fin Heat Exchangers (PFHEs). Using this process, the primary and secondary heat transfer surfaces are joined by solid state diffusion bonds. This results in a high integrity exchanger which can operate at pressures in excess of 200 bar and at temperatures up to 300 C. The SPF/DB process, together with the excellent corrosion resistance of titanium, greatly extends the range of application of the PFHE. The SPF/DB process and its application to the design of a PFHE for a typical offshore duty is described.
