Morphology, Properties, and Stability of Thermoplastic Polymer Blends

Morphology and stability of blends made of components with unusual rheologicalbehavior such as certain thermoplastic elastomers and Liquid Crystalline Polymers (LCP's) were studied. Attention was focused on morphologies that are continuous because of the possible stability of this kind of morphology and morphologies that are fibrillar because of the tendency of LCP's to form fibers when blended with a thermoplast. The field of immiscible polymer blends is introduced. The terms miscibility and compatibility are discussed together with the variety of morphologies of polymer blends. The rheological properties of the polymers used are described. The theory of the breakup of polymer threads is described and the results of the breakup of several threads are presented. The influence of elasticity and yield stress in this breakup behavior is described. Results of the formation of blends with dual phase continuity on a two roll mill and the stability of the formed morphology during annealing and extrusion are given. The formation of self reinforced polymer blends consisting of an LCP and a styrene ethylene/butylene styrene thermoplastic elastomer is described.
