A nonlinear mathematical model of rail corrugations which takes into account nonlinear contact mechanical and geometrical properties of wheel/rail contact is presented. The contact area is approximated by an ellipse and a steady state rolling contact code is used for the description of creep forces. The preliminaries of a theory in which nonlinearity of the contact problem is fully taken into account are summarized. The following aspects are considered: the contact formation on sinusoidal corrugation in its dependence on load and position; the corrugation formation taking place as a consequence of abrasive wear, which is assumed linearly proportional to the frictional work performed in the contact area.
