A grid refinement scheme has been developed for tetrahedral and triangular grid-211u001ebased calculations in message-passing environments. The element adaption scheme 211u001eis based on edge bisection of elements marked for refinement by an appropriate 211u001eerror indicator. Hash table/linked list data structures are used to store nodal 211u001eand element information. The grid along inter-processor boundaries is refined 211u001econsistently with the update of these data structures via MPI calls. The parallel 211u001eadaption scheme has been applied to the solution of an unsteady, three-211u001edimensional, nonlinear, groundwater flow problem. Timings indicate efficiency of 211u001ethe grid refinement process relative to the flow solver calculations.
