It is shown that the degree of coupling between cavity resonators can be considerably increased by resonating the coupling device, and a method is given of realising this in practice. A theory is given for loss free structures and is in agreement with the experimental evidence. The theory is extended to take account of the modification of the dispersion characteristic in the cut-off frequency regions due to the introduction of loss. It is shown that by using this theory it is possible to predict the frequency behaviour of π-mode structures from measurements on single elements.
