Application of Solar Water Heating in Sugarcane Seed Treatment Plants. Final Report

In present plantation practice, hot water and chemicals are used for treatment of sugarcane seedpieces. The purpose of the treatment is to promote germination and to control diseases affecting cane. During seed treatment the temperature of the water is kept at 52 exp 0 C (125.6 exp 0 F). To maintain this temperature, seed treatment facilities use either fuel oil or process steam to generate the necessary heat. With rising fuel prices, it was desirable to investigate the feasibility of replacing the present method of heating with a solar water heater. The solution of technical problems encountered during operation of the solar heater as well as the evaluation of its heating performance were integral to the project. (ERA citation 10:033548)
