Interactive Indexing-Editing System for DOE Technical Information Center

A system to provide computer assisted aids to document indexing for the Department of Energy Technical Information Center Energy Information Data Base is being developed. The goal is to allow more efficient processing of documents and document surrogates by using interactive computer techniques rather than the current combination of manual indexing and batch computer processing. It draws on automatic indexing techniques, but includes the indexer as an integral element of the system; he is the decision-maker while the computer provides clerical support. This approach is transferable to other large production systems.
