Setting-Up of a Direct Reading Emission Spectrometer and Its Adaptation for Plutonium Handling

A Jarrell-Ash 750 AtomComp 1100 series direct-reading emission spectrometer was set up, and its performance features were checked with regard to analysis of uranium-based samples using d.c. arc/inductively coupled argon-plasma excitation techniques. The instrument has been subsequently modified to enable handling of plutonium-based samples. The modifications include building up of a specially designed glove box around the excitation sources and consequent changes in the electro mechanical controls associated with them. The modified system was extensively used for the trace metal assay of FBTR fuel sample. 15 references, 6 figures, 6 tables. (ERA citation 13:018731)
