Multinuclear NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Characterization of the Layer Silicates in Argonne Premium Coals and Model Systems

NMR has been applied to the entire suite of Argonne Premium Coals before and after separation of the detrital mineral particles by sink-float separation. Preliminary results are presented for the direct characterization of the minerals more intimately associated with the organic portion of these coals. Spectra of the density separated fractions demonstrate that different mix of minerals is dispersed in the organic matrix compared to that found for the detrital materials. 5 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.
