The complex Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (OEt sub 2 ) acts as a reducing agent towards nitrogenous bases with reduction potentials of ca. -2.0 V or less, forming paramagnetic coordination compounds. Magnetic susceptibility measurements have been used to identify four different electronic structural types. The reaction of Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (L)/sub n/ (L = Et sub 2 O, n = 1; L = NH sub 3 , n = 2) with organic dichalcogenides (REER, where R = alkyl or aryl and E = 0, S, Se, Te) allows preparation of Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (ER)(L) complexes. The crystal structures were determined. The reactions of Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (ER)(L) with Me sub 3 Al produces (Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (AlMe sub 4 )) sub 2 for ER = OSiMe sub 3 or TeC sub 6 H sub 5 and (Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (AlMe sub 3 )(ER)) sub 2 when ER = OCMe sub 3 , SC sub 6 H sub 5 , S-p-C sub 7 H sub 7 or SeC sub 6 H sub 5 . Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (OEt sub 2 ) reacts with REH sub 2 (E = N, P) to form coordination compounds, Yb(C sub 5 Me sub 5 ) sub 2 (REH sub 2 ) when REH sub 2 is less acidic than C sub 5 Me sub 5 H (pK/sub a/ = 26.5). More acidic amines and phosphines protonate C sub 5 Me sub 5- with formation of insoluble one-ring products. (ERA citation 13:006190)
