This report documents the establishment of design requirements and some conceptual designs for a pulsed light system to protect the ventilation systems of naval ships from biological attack. The work builds on earlier efforts under the same contract, in which the pulsed light method was shown to be very effective in killing simulated biological agents. Design requirements are based on a proposed installation of a prototype system on the ex-USS Shadwell. The high volumetric air flow rate of the chosen installation site dictates that multiple lamps and liquid cooling of the lamps be employed in the prototype system. Lamp lives of up to several months can be achieved if a multiple lamp configuration is used. Cost of a prototype system is estimated at $916,800, while a production system cost is estimated at $484,800.
