摘要

This report summarizes project achievements over the period 1 July 1998 through 30 November 2001. Two major successes are reported. First, the project s scientific objectives were achieved. Empirical testing identified a significant weakness in soldiers capabilities to detection landmines with low metallic content when using standard US Army techniques with the currently fielded detector (AN19/PSS-12). Expert operators were identified who exhibited superior detection performance. A cognitive theory of expert mine detection performance with the AN19/PSS-12 was developed and validated via tests of a training program based on expert skill. Second, findings have been applied in several ways. Foremost, project results led the US Army Engineer School to replace established mine detection training procedures and adopt the training program engineered using the theory and data generated by this project, and subsequently tested, refined, and transferred to Army personnel. US Army Observer/Controllers at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Ft. Polk have successfully given this program's training to troops participating in MREs. The program also has been successfully generalized to train users of the HSTAMIDS system currently in development. This project has also supported development, testing, and distribution of training aids currently being applied in training Army and Marine Corps personnel in landmine detection.
