摘要

This report documents an effort, conducted by the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center between September 2013 and September 2014, to quantify the performance of armor designs as a function of armor areal density against specific small arms threats. The metrics used in the analysis were V0 and V50. The armor designs evaluated were similar in construction to the currently fielded Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts (ESAPI) and X Small Arms Protective Inserts (XSAPI). The threats evaluated for each design were classified threats D and Y for the ESAPI designs and threats D and X for the XSAPI designs. A linear correlation was evident between V50 and V0 performance and the armor s areal density. The results of this effort culminated in a series of graphs and charts which characterize V0 and V50 values to the corresponding stand-off from muzzle for each small arms threat by armor design at 10, 20, 30, and 40% reduced weight from the baseline.
