The paper describes a series of tests carried out to determine the cause of cracking in a reinforced concrete silo used for storing cement. The tests covered the location of the steel reinforcement and the measurement of the laps in the horizontal steel, the pressures exerted on the walls, and the temperature differential through the walls.nThe cause of cracking was a combination of the effects of pressure in excess of that designed for large temperature differentials through the walls of the silo, and a deficiency in reinforcing steel.
