A companion paper has described certain data reduction procedures that have-been developed for the analysis of vowels, and has inflated that these procedures were used to obtain data for a number of utterances by three talkers. Specifically, the automatic analysis technique was used to obtain formant frequencies throughout the vowel portions of 36O syllables. The syllables were constructed from eight different stressed vowels occurring In 15 different symmetrical' no nasal consonant environments. Die boundaries of the vocalic portions of these syllables were established from visual examination of spectrograms of the utterances, and the automatic analysis program was instructed to determine frequencies and bandwidths of the first three formants for spectral samples spaced 8.3 mess apart throughout these vocalic portions.
