This study was designed to provide information bearing on the following topics: 1) the relation between personality variables and individual differences in the experiences and handling of stress; 2) the relation between interpersonal variables and stress; and 3) the acquaintance process. (Following Newcomb) as it operated in this specialized group. The subjects in the study were the 17 team members of the American lount Everest Expedition 1963.nDuring the just completed first year of the study two kinds of raw data have been collected : a; a three-day personality assessment was conducted at the Institute of Personality Assessraent and Research, University of California, Berkeley; and 2) the author accompanied the Expedition to the mountain to gather field data relating to the topics listed above. No technical reports were issued during this year.nThe second year of the investigation will be taken up with the data-processing, analyzing, and the summarizing of results.
