A systematic experimental development of a vortex recirculation lift system for use on Ground Effect Machines (GEMs) has uncovered a practical configuration which promises to eventually fulfill a large portion of the high potential predicted by theory. . Ideally, the only power expenditure required to seal the high base pressure beneath a GEM is that to overcome duct friction losses encountered by the recalculating air. The vortex recirculation system involves minimum ducting and hence is optimum.
