As technological problems have become more complex over the last half a century the methods of analysis applied to these problems had to become more sophisticated also. Correspondingly engineering science which utilizes these analysis methods had to expand its scope to encompass an evergrowing list of "never" tools. Thus around the-turn of the century Ohm's lay was considered adequate for most practical' electrical problems while today it forms merely a foundation upon which are heaped such "novel" concepts as complex variables (for electrical network analysis), differential equations (for transients), operational calculus (for linear systems), and many others.
