A VERSATILE ELECTRONIC CROWBAR SYSTEM

The development of high-power modulating-anode klystrons has presented the equipment design engineer with the problem of providing adequate protec¬tion for the klystron in the event of a "fault." A versatile electronic crowbar system has been developed to provide for this contingency. This system consists of two units: 1) a multiple-gap fixed-space discharge unit capable of opening with an "infinite" range, that is, from zero plate vol¬tage to the maximum operating voltage; and 2) a logic unit capable of provid¬ing a series of trigger pulses programmed for the particular needs of the system.nThe system provides protection against the initial capacitor discharge and limits capacitor recharge until the circuit breakers have opened.nA particular application for an equipment operating at140 kv, 8 amperes average current, with an energy storage bank of 110,000 joules, is discussed.
