This report covers the development and Engineering Tests of the Short Range Electronic Positioning Equipment (SREPE) conducted by USAEGIMRADA in the Northern Virginia Test Area, at USAERDL, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and at the Arctic Test Facilities at Ft. Greely Alaska. The primary objective of this development was the provision of an all-weather, day-night, highly portable system for determining survey positions specifically for use by Artillery units operating within the 10- by 10-mile area concept of the Artillery Survey System. Based on the findings of this investigation, this report concludes that "the-SREPE Model COR 2 does meet the essential requirements for the 10-mile concept of the Artillery Survey System and may, in fact, be extended beyond these parameters. The equipment as. tested will enable an unlimited number of passive, man-portable receivers to receive signals transmitted from the base stations which can be converted to UTM coordinates. of each receiver either by plot ting at the site or by a FADAC computer at some convenient location. The system does have shortcomings in the sense that its range may. be reduced to the 10- by 10-mile limits by high electrical noise levels, night effects, and poor ground conductivity .erroneous positional data may-result through poor, site .selection with respect to the proximity and orientation of local conductors such as power .lines, telephone lines, and wire fences. Furthermore, the system can be Jammed by a radiator of sufficient power and proximity within 50 cycles of the assigned frequency for the base station transmitters. While the accuracy of 15 meters (radial error) appears to be suitable for the Artillery Survey System concept, it is neither considered applicable to geodetic and topographic surveys for Corps of Engineers use, nor does, it appear that the system could be readily modified to yield reliable accuracies of the magnitude required by Engineer users.
