The following experiments were conducted to investigate the existence and quantitative char¬acteristics of photon radiation from the mammalian cerebral cortex, in excess of that due to ther¬mal radiation.nSurgical exposure of the cerebral cortex of several mammalian species was performed and various forms of radiant energy transducers were employed to detect and/or to measure the in¬tensity of radiation of cortical origin. In some experiments, observations were carried out during electrical and chemical stimulation of the cortex. Measurements of emitted radiation were also made during termination of the animals by injection of cytotoxic materials into the brain via the carotid artery to achieve a rapid cessation of vital activity of the cortical tissue.
