摘要

Studies were undertaken to ascertain (1) the stereorelationships involved in surface-substrate interactions of non-polar organic molecules on polarizing inorganic surfaces and (2) the effect of such surface-substrate interaction on chemical reaction between the adsorbed substrate and a third substance (either adsorbed or in solution). The following methods of approach were investigated: adsorption chromatography on alumina; molecular complexation chromatography; polarographic reduction at the mercury cathode; catalytic hydrogenation using platinum; molecular complexation in Diels-Adler condensation. It was possible to correlate the physicochemical processes which occur when non-polar molecules undergo reaction at polarizing surfaces and to observe the relative degrees of importance of resonance, polar, and steric factors in the processes investigated.
