The primary objective of the program was to design, develop, and manufacture, within the requirements of the specification, an equipment which would: operate in the 328 mc to 336 mc glide slope band; accept, combine, and mix signals from three different sources into the appropriate phase and amplitude relationship; and deliver the signals to three FAA supplied glide slope transmitting antennas. Full use was made of the Micro-Radionics AIR-STRIP technique. The tasks, activities, conclusions, and recommendations are sequentially presented for the entire life of the program, from award of contract through qualification and acceptance. A value and performance analysis of low-cost copper-clad base laminates was conducted, which resulted in an extensive investigation of all known materials. A special RF connector was used, to save the cost of modifying the UC-58A/U Type N connectors which required the installation of connecting links and pins. Simplicity and low cost were emphasized in the design of the RF probe coupler, and the crystal detector was located on the external surface of the package to provide maximum accessibility during crystal replacement. The hybrids used for the power divider were located so that the phase shifters could be mounted logically and the length of all transmission lines were kept to a minimum to reduce phase error. The development of the principal subsystems are discussed in detail. Because the equipment has the inherent performance capabilities required to successfully meet the specified criteria, it is recommended that no changes be made. (Author)
