Constructive Thermal Degradation of Epoxide Resins Cured with Several Novel Bridged Diels-Alder Anhydride Adducts

The synthesis of several novel bridged Diels-Alder anhydride adducts, useful as curing agents for epoxide resins, is reported. The effect of these adducts on the thermal stability and ablative performance of epoxide resin systems is shown. The concept of controlled constructive thermal degradation for ablative systems is discussed in relation to these adducts. Excellent ablative performance was obtained with these systems employing Refrasil, 'Pluton' B-1, and graphite fabric reinforcements. Char rates of the epoxide systems were found to be the same or lower than those of phenolics, while the thermal conductivity was 2 to 3 times lower than that of the phenolics. (Author)
