This paper discusses the properties of epoxy coatings designed to cure under both ambient and sub-ambient conditions using a multifunctional amine adduct. The curing rate of a two-component epoxy-amine resin system is distinctly retarded at sub-ambient temperatures. The degree of retardation depends on the reactivity of the epoxide resin and the curing agent. The temperature and atmospheric humidity exert a strong influence on the curing and film surface properties of two-component paints. Reaction cure kinetics is studied as a function of time using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to predict the barrier properties of coating films. Confocal microscopy has been used to study the morphology of cured films. Results from the studies in pigmented coatings is discussed to elucidate some of the unique advantages of using multifunctional amine adducts for the curing of epoxide resins at sub-ambient cure conditions.
