The program was established to determine diffusion joining process parameters and procedures for the production of hollow balls for use in high speed turbine engine bearings. The principal objective of the program was to produce diffusion bonded specimens having joint properties approaching those of the base metal, with uniform hardness across the joint, and no internal joint upset. Approximately 600 specimens were fabricated and tested to determine joint quality. Tests for joint quality included static tensile, static torsion, tensile fatigue, metallurgical, and other miscellaneous examinations. (Author)
