A Test Technique to Study Interlaminar Shear Phenomena of Laminated Composites.

The objective of the program was to develop a test method and a configuration for the determination of the interlaminar strength of fibrous composites. The slip plane shear interlaminar test technique was selected over several existing test methods as the most promising technique to measure and characterize the interlaminar shear strength of laminated composites. The test method was utilized to evaluate four basic laminates and a quasi-isotropic laminate made of baron/NARMCO 5505prepreg. The basic laminates evaluated were 0, 90, 0/90,and plus or minus 45degrees. The interlaminar shear strength of the plus or minus 45degrees laminate was one-third less than that of the 0degrees laminate. This apparent decrease in strength is believed due to residual stresses resulting from the lamination process and fiber orientation effects. Evaluation of data on e quasi-isotropic laminate indicated that the interlaminar strength of a combination laminate could not be directly predicted from the basic laminate data. (Author)
