A method and apparatus for testing interlaminar shear mechanical properties of composite laminates. The method involves preparing an elongate rectangular specimen and mounting said rectangular specimen longitudinally with three equally spaced contact points S against a first surface and two contact points L against the opposing surface. A load is applied via the contacts to the specimen until the specimen delaminates indicated by an audible crack. Displacement of the specimen is measured at an inner region of the specimen at a section of pure shear, for example using linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs). A layer of paint may be placed on the specimen to make the location of delamination more visible. This measurement can be used to accurately determine interlaminar shear strength and modulus so the failure properties of the material are known for design consideration. The method may be referred to as a double span bending test.
