The buckling of eccentrically stringer-stiffened cylindrical shells is studied by a 'discrete' approach in which the stringers are considered as linear discontinuities represented by the Dirac delta function. Donnell type linear theory is used. Buckling loads under axial compression are calculated for local and general instability. Results for the latter are compared with those obtained by 'smeared'-stiffener theory. On account of the large number of stringers required to ensure failure by general instability and not by local buckling, the discreteness effect is usually very small. A parametric study is carried out for combinations of shell and stringer parameters chosen to emphasize the discreteness effect and the maximum effect found was 14%. The effect of rotational restraint, due to the torsional stiffness of the stringers on the buckling of panels is also studied.
