Normal mode theory,ray theory,and modified ray theory are compared for several arbitrary velocity profiles. The normal mode theory program uses a finite difference approach to solve for the spectrum of discrete modes once an arbitrary sound velocity profile and a constant velocity fluid bottom are specified. A ray tracing program is used to find the coherent sum of rays at points of interest. Modified ray theory leading to an Airy function solution is used to correct ray theory at caustics and in adjacent shadow zones. (Modified author abstract)
