Acute Liver Disease after Cutaneous Thermal Injury.

The incidence, clinical characteristics, and natural history of acute liver disease complicating thermal injury have not been fully described. Postmortem surveys and laboratory investigations have recognized congestion, fatty degeneration, and focal necrosis of the liver as early pathologic consequences of an extensive cutaneous burn. Although prospective clinical studies have documented impairment of liver function immediately after burn, these surveys have not characterized the nature or the clinical course of this dysfunction. To better define this acute hepatic disease, early and serial liver function studies were performed in 81 consecutive burn patients admitted to the US Army Institute of Surgical Research. (Author)
