Video Laser Beam Recorder.

This contract continues work accomplished on Contract F33615-73-C-1213 and F33615-71-C-1371 to develop a high performance airborne dual channel 16 mm laser beam film recorder for television type sensors. Two channels of interlaced video pictures in 525 or 875 lines per frame format are recorded on film at 30 frames per second, with frames in Super 8mm format side by side on 2-1/2 mil high resolution 16/mm film with variable density optical sound track for each channel. The physical system, packaged in an airborne unit 12.75 in. x 32.75 in. x 29 in., consists of a helium-neon laser as a radiation source, acousto-optic modulators as electro-optic transducers, catadioptric flat field linear scan optics, ball bearing suspended 16-face rotating mirror polygon as horizontal scanner, galvanometer deflector as vertical scanner, and a rolling loop mechanism transport as film camera. The laser optics and control system attain 70% transfer efficiency at 16 MHz bandwidth. The rolling loop transport does not allow full realization of the performance of the laser optics and control system. Recommendations include sacrifice of frame height for film stability and de-interlace of video signals for film recording. (Author)
