Archaeological Test Excavation of the Highway 8 Site, 32DU2, Garrison Reservoir, North Dakota

The Highway 8 Site, 32DU2, is located on the banks of Garrison Reservoir in northwestern North Dakota, approximately eighteen miles north of Haliday. The site is situated on a butte adjacent to the reservoir and is surrounded by water on three sides. Surface features are scattered on the butte and include some fifteen depressions varying greatly in size. Limited test excavations recovered smoothed, simple-stamped, and cord-roughened ceramics in association with chipped stone artifacts, flaking debris, and bison bone. Subsequent laboratory analysis of the cultural materials indicates a Northern Plains Woodland village. Recommendations are made for further excavation and include mitigative alternatives as the site is being eroded by wave action of the reservoir. The site is also recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. (Author)
