An Evaluation of Pictographic Symbols for Controls and Displays in Road Vehicles.

This study investigates the recognition value of 25 symbols developed by the International Standard Organization (ISO) for controls and displays in road vehicles. A sample of 125 native US citizens (75 males and 50 females) with more than one year of driving experience served as subjects. The results demonstrate a remarkable recognition value of 20 symbols. Only five symbols failed the acceptance criterion of a minimum 75 percent recognition. It was found that identification of the symbols was, in general, not influenced by sex or additional military driving experience. (Author)
