Investigation of New Subsystem Concepts to Improve the Operational and Hydrodynamic Capabilities of Advanced Amphibian Vehicles

The following actions should be taken to advance, appropriately, the technology base needed to support the development of a cost-effective amphibian for the 1995-2000 time period: a major program, such as the Marine Corps Surface Mobility Exploratory Development Program, should be tasked to initiate actions which would provide incentives for industry to push technologies that offer high payoffs for an amphibian vehicle of the future; a major and coordinated effort should be devoted to the development of lightweight materials, including armor, which can be applied to amphibians in order to enhance, significantly, their mobility effectiveness and survivability; hull shape design efforts should provide for a positive dynamic trim while underway; an advanced waterjet should be developed which has a low weight, small size, high efficiency, and a high degree of control; and university research centers should be investigated as potential high-risk/high-payoff contributors to the objectives of Marine Corps amphibian vehicle programs.
