Summary and Review of the Tectonic Structure of Eurasia. Part I

An extensive search of the available geologic and geophysical literature dealing with the crust and upper mantle properties of the U.S.S.R. and Eurasia has been conducted. During the past 25 years a vast amount of deep seismic sounding has been done in the U.S.S.R. This review has attempted to fully use source material from the Soviet literature that has resulted from this massive campaign. Additionally, previously unavailable Russian data that has been organized and critiqued by Piwinskii (1979) has been reviewed and included in this report. Vol'vovskii and Vol'vovskii (1978) have published numerous cross sections from deep seismic sounding profiles that were extremely valuable in the synthesis of this report. From this broad data base the U.S.S.R. was subdivided into eleven distinct tectonic provinces. The boundaries for these provinces were drawn after considering geologic evolution, seismic activity, heat flow, Moho properties, crustal properties, seismic wave velocities, attenuation, gravity, regional phase propagation and upper mantle structure. However, the main emphasis in this regionalization has been on seismic properties. (Author)
