Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation by Using the Dvorak Technique with Visual Satellite Imagery

In 1975, V. Dvorak published a technique for estimating the current intensity of tropical cyclones by using satellite imagery. Measurement of certain cloud features indicate current wind speeds. A 'model' development theory and picture clues contribute information on past and future trends. Dvorak's latest revisions are discussed and the current operational procedures for use with visual imagery are offered.
