摘要

Lithium sulfur dioxide batteries were analyzed to determine their hazardous waste characteristics under United States environmental regulations. The batteries were subjected to the hazardous waste criteria under 49 CFR 261 for ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity. Extraction Procedure Toxicity (EP Tox) method was used to determine toxicity. Under these regulations and methods, lithium sulfur dioxide batteries are not listed as hazardous waste; however, they were found to be reactive hazardous waste (DOO3), and components exhibit ignitable characteristics. Further, fully discharged batteries are not hazardous waste.
