Extension of Unit Allocation and Countermobility Planning Algorithms in the AirLand Research Model

This thesis extends the development of the AirLand Research Model (ALARM), an on-going research effort at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), in the areas of maneuver unit allocation and countermobility planning at the battalion level. The feasibility and desirability of multiple algorithms to determine enemy avenues of approaches into a battalion sector and to select the optimal position along the avenue for unit placement is demonstrated. The concept of analyzing terrain on the basis of flow rate, the ability to through-put a deployed attacker, is investigated. An algorithms linking unit placement and countermobility operations is developed. Additionally, shortcomings noted in ALARM by previous research are resolved. These deployment have been coded into SIMSCRIPT and integrated into the existing model on the VAX 11/780 at NPS.
