A confirmatory chemical test for human exposure to the incapacitating agent 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate (BZ) has been developed. The analytical method selected was an isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) technique for determining BZ and its major metabolites benzilic acid (BA) and 3-quinuclidinol (Q) in urine. The Army set required detection limits for the test of 0.5 ng/mL for BZ and 5 ng/mL for BA and Q in urine. The method developed exceeded these detection limits. A detailed description of the analytical method is provided in this report. The method was successfully validated on eight different urines, some spiked with the analytes and others as blanks. A statistical evaluation of the validation test data is included. A literature search for possible interfering compounds with this test recognized only one substance, the prescription drug clidinium bromide, as a possible interference.
