Continuum models of large repetitive lattice structures are often used to provide computationally efficient analyses of static, dynamic and thermomechanical properties. In this report, a continuum model is used to study wave propagation in lattice structures. Attention is focused on a tetrahedral lattice structure which may be modeled as an equivalent homogeneous transversely isotropic continuum. Numerical results for phase velocities, deviation angles, and wave front surfaces in the equivalent continuum show that wave propagation in lattice structures may be remarkably different from the more familiar wave propagation in isotropic continua. The results given here, which ignore all effects of boundaries of the lattice and which are valid for wavelengths that are long compared with the basic cell size of the lattice, are intended to give insight into how waves may propagate in large repetitive lattice structures.
