After the completion of the renovation of the controlled climate room required for the surface analytical instrumentation in the summer of 1987, the Scanning Auger Microscope (SAM) and the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) were installed and the new Surface Analytical Laboratory (SAL) containing this equipment became operational in November 1987.
