Paleomagnetism of Eastern Nazca Plate Seamounts.

Paleomagnetism of eastern Nazca plate seamounts defines Nazca and Farallon absolute plate motion during Cenozoic times. Magnetic and bathymetric surveys are presented for two eastern Nazca plate seamounts in Chile Basin and they are used to calculate paleomagnetic poles with uniform and nonuniform magnetic modeling. The paleopole for Piquero-2 seamount is coincident with the earth's pole, suggesting a young seamount. The paleopole for Piquero-1 seamount indicates that the Nazca plate moved 23 deg northward during 0-50 ma. This is 13 deg more latitudinal motion than predicted by a Pacific hotspot reference frame and 20 deg more motion than predicted by DSDP sediment and basalt paleomagnetism.
