Many properties of metal matrix composites are strongly influenced by the nature of the reinforcement-matrix interface. This in turn depends upon factors such as pretreatment of the fibers and composite fabrication techniques. The nature of the reinforcement-matrix interface is most commonly studied by electron spectroscopic techniques, which can give information about the degree of bonding between the reinforcement and matrix, and the formation of additional phases in the matrix material or at the interface. The use of these techniques to investigate the inter-relationship between fabrication techniques, interface properties and mechanical properties is described, and a number of specific examples are given.
